Best of SMILE 1

This week long camp is comprised of some of the best and popular experiments from the past years of SMILE Camp. Campers will explore a wide variety of subjects including physics, chemistry, and numerous engineering fields through hands on experimentation. Each day, campers will engage in two experiments in the morning and two experiments in the afternoon. Some examples include: growing metallic crystals, electromagnetism, redox reactions, metal casting, working glass, thermite reactions, and exploring the world at 77 Kelvin with liquid nitrogen. Campers will walk away with the know-how to take their academic knowledge, merge with the real world, and take fun science to the next level!

Sessions Available:

Rising 6th graders through 8th graders:

  • Track Out 1: May 15 - May 19
  • Track Out 2: May 22 - May 15
  • Track Out 3: May 30 - June 2

3D Printing and Modeling Software

This camp will be a full week of designing and printing in 3D. 3D printers have changed the way we develop prototypes and new technologies. Campers have weeklong access to multiple 3D printers and a 3D modeling technology. We will teach campers how to use a 3D modeling package to make designs which they will then print in 3D. Early in the week, we will show campers how to download classic designs from the internet and print them while learning how to use the 3D printers. Later in the week, campers will be designing their own models to print as well as completing challenges given to them by the instructors to demonstrate important topics in 3D printing and design in general. Campers will also use a 3D scanner to scan objects to replicate them or edit and then print their edited scans. Campers will take home all of their designs and builds.

Sessions Available:

Rising 6th graders through 8th graders:

  • Track Out 1: May 15 - May 19
  • Track Out 2: May 22 - May 15

Programming Micro-controller - Arduino!

This camp will cover all things Arduino. What these affordable programmable controllers can do is amazing. We will use the Arduino platform to build multiple projects which will build skills in project design and assembly, circuitry, and programming. Campers will gain an understanding of how to utilize the Arduino platform so they know where to go and how to do their own projects. Campers will keep the projects they build including the Arduino board and components which they can utilize to build future projects of their own design.

Mobile App Development and Design

Have you ever wanted to program your own mobile phone app? Learn how to program your own using Android as the testing platform. We start with the basics and build up to accessing the device sensors. We supply the computers and android tablets to test and run the the code. Participants can load their programs on their own devices. We use a full featured educational software that uses block programming which allows program success without the hassle of syntax errors. Campers will be given a flash drive containing their work at the end of the week so that they can continue on their projects as well as build new projects after camp.

Sessions Available:

Rising 6th graders through 8th graders:

  • Track Out 2: May 22 - May 15

Raspberry Pi

Not just an Hour of Code:  Raspberry Pi is a self contained mini computer system that runs on Python. Campers will learn how to utilize the Raspberry Pi platform to build projects and devices with a variety of functionality. Campers will keep their Raspberry Pi device and project materials at the end of the week.

Rising 6th graders through 7th graders:

  • Week 1: June 12 – June 16
  • Week 3: June 26 - June 30
  • Week 6: July 17 - July 21
